What is a Mole?

DWU #1 a)  How many grams are in 147.8 mL of water? Show your work.  b) How many water molecules are in 147.8 mL of water?

What do all of these items have in common?


There are the same number of all of them, 12.  We have a special name for 12 of anything, called a dozen.  It doesn't matter what it is that we are talking about... 12 items make a dozen.  If you can understand this, you can understand that when we count 6.02 X10^23 molecules or atoms, we can call that a mole.  Just like counting 12 donuts can be grouped as a dozen, 6.02 X10^23 molecules can be grouped as a mole.

I checked the homework then went over it.  We talked about the concept of a mole with relation to the above picture.  The concept as presented here is fairly straightforward.  We then did parts of the mole worksheet and watched the World of Chemistry video on the mole.  We also celebrated mole day by eating Avocado's Number Guaca"mole", eating Mole-asses cookies and drinking 4.94 X 10^24 water molecules (that's the answer to the warm-up above and the number of water molecules that would fill a large Dixie cup).
